Gary Simmons
“I Shoulda Known” Pen and Ink 9×12
Gary Simmons is known for technical refinement and for eclectic subject matter. He began pen-and-ink drawing as a science illustrator at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois as a student worker in the zoology department. After acquiring a B.A. and M.A. in English and American literature, he earned a doctorate in Instructional Systems Technology at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. In 1973 he worked for the University of Arkansas, then began a freelance artist career in 1976. In 1991 he began teaching art at Henderson State University where he retired as professor emeritus in 2013.
This work grew as a whimsical comment on my own foibles and mistakes, usually made in the glaring light of the realities that would seem to make the mistake obvious.
