Take it Up a Notch

Artist Name: Beth Owen
Title of Artwork: Take it Up a Notch
Medium: Oil

Artist Bio:
Beth Owen grew up in El Dorado, AR, where art and humanities played a central role in her upbringing. Her mother and maternal grandfather, both artists, instilled a love for the creative process in her from a young age. Beth fondly remembers spending time with her grandfather, using finger paints to create works of art. Beth pursued her passion for art by earning a Bachelor of Arts in Art History from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, specializing in the art and archaeology of Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. She was particularly drawn to the vibrant colors and bright pigments seen in ancient codices of the Aztec, Mixtec, and Maya cultures.
Following her mother’s passing in 2019, Beth embarked on a journey of self-healing through full-time painting. As an abstract expressionist, she employs acrylic, watercolor, and oil painting techniques, with a preference for oil due to its glossy finish.
Her work is characterized by its highly textured quality, achieved by applying a thick primer of heavy gesso before creating an
underpainting, resulting in a 2D fresco or pilaster effect.

Artist Statement:
“Take It Up. Notch”is an abstract work of art that resembles a satellite view of a particular section of the earth. It is another piece inspired by nature due to its combination of vivid colors; blue for the area lakes of Northwest Arkansas, green for our state parks and forests, white for the winters we experience snow, a brown for the rich soil of our state, and red to represent the vitality of nature and its people.
