Artist Bio:
Dr. Gary Simmons is a nationally recognized pen-and-ink artist. He has had Gary Simmons Studio in Hot Springs, Arkansas since 1976. In 1992 he wrote The Technical Pen: Techniques for Artists, published by NewYork’s Watson-Guptill Publishers and issued in English and translated in Chinese and Russian. In 2001 the Arkansas Arts Council awarded him the Governor’s Arts Award for Arkansas’s Individual Artist. In addition to pen and ink, he works in a variety of other media, including watercolor, oils and pastels. He is represented by Justus Fine Art (dja@aristotle.net) in Hot Springs.

Artist Statement:
Birth of Myth came about during the recent eclipse and the interest it evoked. I am fascinated by the effect myth has on us and by how much of our cultural traditions and personal belief systems stem from our effort to explain what we don’t understand. I’ve wondered what it must have been like to watch an eclipse with no explanation other than the one imagined.
